About

Hello. My name is John Seitz. I am an amatuer photographer living in St. Louis, MO. I became interested in photography while I was living in San Francisco taking design courses at City College. We had a great photography lab there (I believe it has since been stripped out in the name of digital progress) and my design teachers encouraged us to take some creative classes outside of just traditional graphic design. I bought a $200 Vivitar fully-manual SLR, took a class and learned how to develop my own film and make my own prints. It was a painstaking process that could take hours to develop one good print. But I loved the solitude in the dark and silent lab and I enjoyed the artisinal process. I lament the loss of this aspect of photography in our digital age. On the other hand, I'm now married with two kids and barely have time to shoot images let alone develop. So I've gone digital as most of us have. You can't beat the convenience of it.

Photography is an escape for me. It helps me focus on the details of my surroundings. It also helps compliment my other pursuits like design and music. Like music and design it combines the technical with the aesthetic. But unlike these two methods of expression which create a flow in time and space for the viewer/listener, photography freezes that flow for the us and allows us to ponder a moment in time.

Well, enough rambling. Thank you for visiting the site. I hope you enjoy the photography you see here and I hope it might increase your interest in this wonderful pursuit.
